Match-2 Prison Outreach Program
Bring community and hope to incarcerated youth through the Match-2 Prison Outreach Program in Stockton. Adult male volunteers, ages 21 and older, visit young male inmates, ages 8 to 25, at the California Youth Authority who receive little or no visitations from family or friends. The purpose is to attempt to alleviate the inmates' feelings of isolation and loneliness by developing a supportive and caring friendship that will hopefully provide a bridge from incarceration to the community when released. Statistics show that the highest level of repeat crime is in prisoners who do not receive visits or letters. They serve their time, but are not rehabilitated from the experience, and 70% fail on parole after committing repeat felonies within six months. But after developing an ongoing relationship with a mentor, 8 our of 10 youth in the Match-2 Program never commit another crime. Adult male and female volunteer tutors, ages 21 and older are also needed to assist inmates, ages 12 to 17 years, improve their basic skills the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. Volunteers receive orientation and training and must successfully complete a fingerprint background check and tuberculosis clearance; both are provided at no cost to the volunteer.
