The Environmental Resources Department maintains solid waste management as follows:
- Administers and enforces agreements, ordinances and regulations relative to Franchise and Industrial waste haulers.
- Performs services for the county's incorporated cities and solid waste facility operators which include: planning strategies and program development, document review and evaluation, consultation and technical assistance.
- Prepares and updates the County–wide Integrated Waste Management Plan for the County and the nine incorporated cities, including management of mandated waste reduction goals.
- Inspects and permits waste haulers, food processing by–product sites, and inert disposal sites, and recycling centers.
- Administers contracts & agreements between between contracting communities (Stanislaus County and City of Modesto) and the waste-to-energy project.
- Administers the Stanislaus County Recycling Market Development Zone.
- Ensure compliance with the waste tire storage and handling standards.
- Provide up-to-date and accurate information and assistance regarding solid waste and recycling to the public.
