What you need
To driver in the State of California, you must both obtain a driver's license and register your vehicle with the California Department of Motor Vehicles. To obtain a vehicle registration, state law requires that drivers submit proof of insurance. Drivers must have a minimum amount of insurance so that they are financially responsible for damage created by an accident. A driver must be financially responsible for not only his/her damages, but also for damages to other drivers involved in the accident. The minimum liability insurance coverage for private passenger vehicles per accident is $35,000 in the State of California. Potential drivers may submit a copy of their insurance document to the DMV to receive a vehicle registration.

There are many insurance companies that offer potential drivers coverage of automobile accidents. Although all insurance policies offer the same basic service, different companies may be able to offer advantages or discounts to drivers. When choosing an automobile insurance company, be sure to compare rates of similar insurance policies. |
